Pigs

A few months ago, we got some pigs. Three pigs actually. Ryan and his friend Ryan wanted to raise a pig for an Elder's Quorum activity and they wanted pigs for themselves also. We started by getting those not so little piglets and Ryan and Ryan built a pen for them at his friend Ryan's Dad's house. Ryan and Ryan were very diligent about feeding those pigs and taking care of them. When we first got them, Brynn picked out which one she liked the best and named her Alexa (like the Barbie princess) and then asked if we could eat her for her birthday. There were no attachment issues for my kids.

The time finally came to get the pig for the church activity which was going to be a luau. This is the pig in the back of my car. I got to drive around with that back there for an hour or so.

Building the pit where the pig was going to be cooked...

The pig waiting to be wrapped so it could be cooked...

still waiting...

The pig cooked all night long in this covered pit...

The pig all done cooking and still wrapped up...

I don't have any other pictures after that. The activity was fun and we all "pigged out". We learned that there is a lot of meat on a 200 pound pig. I think every family took a plate of meat home with them.

Our friend Ryan took one of the remaining pigs and us and another family at church split "Alexa". I got to go to the butcher and watch the whole process of cutting the pig up and I got to personally wrap my pig pieces. It was actually kind of fun to see the process. I don't think it is for everyone though. So far we have enjoyed breakfast sausage, Italian sausage, bacon and pork chops from our pig. It is all very yummy!

Brynn said the dinner prayer the night the pig was cooking in the ground for the luau. She said "please bless the pig to have a good time being dead". I thought it was hilarious.
